How To Play Sega Genesis Games On Your Mac

If you have a passion for classic games like Sonic the Hedgehog, Mortal Kombat, Shining Force II or Gunstar Heroes then you’ll love Genesis Plus for the Mac. You won’t find a smoother well-developed seemingly flawless Genesis emulator for the Mac.

Genesis Plus

In order to play our favorite childhood games we first need an emulator and that’s where Genesis Plus comes in. An emulator acts as the game console right on your Mac – allowing you to play your favorite games made for that specific console.

Head on over to macupdate.com and click on Download Now, once the file has downloaded successfully drag it onto your desktop or wherever and leave it sit for now.

ROMs

ROM images or files are copies of data from “read only memory” chips found in an old-school game cartridge. Emulators can run ROM’s, which makes the ROM itself more the less a game.

There are several sites like freeroms.com that have a rather large selection of ROM’s to choose from. Once you have found your game download the ROM, the ROM image should look like a Sega Genesis cartridge. Place the image somewhere for easy access – a folder marked “Sega Genesis Games” would be a good place to store them.

Loading a ROM

Now go back to your Genesis Plus Emulator, upon opening you’ll be given a window where you will need to navigate to the ROM image that you have just downloaded. Select the ROM then “Open” and enjoy your game. Whenever you open Genesis Plus again it should open the last folder you used – this way you don’t have to keep searching for the ROM each time you open the emulator.

Copyright

Now I know many sources throughout the Internet claim that if you own the original game cartridge then you have the right to download the ROM but this is just not true. To clarify some bad information about Emulation and ROMS – Emulators are not illegal HOWEVER owning certain ROMS is illegal.

You need to do some research on the game you wish to download first to see if the game company put a disclaimer on it or not. Believe it or not some game companies do allow you to download old ROM images so just do some research before downloading. Good Luck and enjoy your games!
