Apple unexpectedly sent out a media invitation yesterday to an event that will take place in New York City on 2nd December. The aim is to showcase the most outstanding games and apps of 2019.
Apple normally just sends out a press release to announce the yearβs top apps, while its autumn events are reserved for highlighting new hardware.
In the invitation, Apple only says that the event will be to honour the favourite games and apps of this year.
That makes it sound similar to the Apple Design Awards in June every year, where the company showcases apps with the best designs in their class. In 2018, Apple announced the best apps on 3rd December without any media event.
So far in 2019, Apple has already released the new AirPod Pro, three new iPhones, a 16-inch MacBook Pro and a new Apple Watch. The one new device we have not seen yet is a new iPad Pro.
In August, Debby Wu and Mark Gurman wrote for Bloomberg that Apple was preparing to release a new iPad Pro with 11-inch and 12.9-inch display sizes and upgraded processors and cameras. The company announced the current iPad Pro model in October 2018.
Thereβs no solid reason, however, to suspect that Apple plans to announce a new iPad next month. It might simply be that it wants to focus on games and apps as part of its wider drive into service.
The company announced Apple Arcade, its maiden subscription game service, earlier this year. It offers 100 games at a monthly subscription rate of $5.
As far as digital services are concerned, 2019 was a ground-breaking year for Apple. Apart from Apple Arcade, it also released Apple News Plus and Apple TV Plus.
Keeping that in mind, we have good reason to suspect that the company will use next monthβs press event to keep the spotlight firmly on digital services.
