Apple yesterday announced the latest update for Safari Technology Preview, an experimental browser that it first launched 18 months ago.
The company developed the Safari Technology Preview to test various new features that could later be incorporated into its popular Safari browser.
The Safari Technology Preview release comes with no less than 40 enhancements and fixes for WebGL, Rendering, Media, Web Inspector, CSS Grid, CSS, Web API, Accessibility, Fetch API, Entry API, File System and Javascript.
This means that with Safari 11 also being available via the macOS High Sierra beta version, the company is currently offering two different editions of Safari Technology Preview, one for those using macOS High Sierra and the other one for people using macOS Sierra.
The updated Safari Technology Preview can be downloaded from the Mac App Store via the Software Update mechanism by anybody who previously downloaded the Safari browser. The Safari Technology Preview website offers comprehensive release notes for the updated version.
With Safari Technology Preview, Apple aims to collect feedback from users and developers. If you already have a Safari browser, there is no reason why you can’t also have the developers’ edition; the two can run side by side without any problem.
And in case you don’t have a Safari 11 browser yet, it can be downloaded to Macs running the 2015 El Capital or the 2016 Sierra. You can access the Mac App Store by clicking on the Apple menu at the screen’s top left, and then selecting App Store. The Safari browser should show up under the ‘Updates Available’ section.
Those readers who use Firefox or Chrome will be used to regular updates. This is not the case with Safari – it only gets updated once a year, when Apple releases new versions of iOS and macOS. Between those yearly updates the company only issues bug fixes and security patches about once every 10 weeks.
