Apple could release a larger version of the rumoured budget-focused iPhone SE successor after evidence of a new device was spotted in the latest leak of details for iOS 14.
The release of a 4.7-inch ‘iPhone 9’ during the coming months is almost certain at this point, but this is the first time that a ‘Plus’-sized version of the same model has been seen.
The entry-level iPhone is likely to recycle the iPhone 8 design with bezels at the top and bottom and a home button for Touch ID, but with the latest A13 processor and other updated internals.
The Plus version of the phone is also expected to mirror the iPhone 8 Plus release.
This means that there will be a larger 5.5-inch LCD display and perhaps a more advanced camera system than in the standard model.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects the basic iPhone SE successor to retail from $399 when it goes on sale in Q2 2020.
There will be 64GB and 128GB variants available at launch and three colours: space grey, silver and red.
There have been no pricing details leaked for the Plus model, but it may carry a $100 premium, similar to when the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 launched in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
The latest versions of Apple’s iPhone are set to pack in more advanced tech than the older models they are based on.
There will be Apple Pay’s Express Transit feature for quick payments without Touch ID and the ability to scan NFC tags without the need for specific apps.
The outbreak of coronavirus is likely to have knocked Apple’s production plans off course slightly, but the new devices are still expected to be unveiled at an online-only event sometime during the next two or three months.
