Two premium iPhone 12 models will sport superfast 120Hz refresh rate screens that will deliver a better user experience than standard 60Hz models, according to new information leaked over the weekend.
Insider ‘Ice Universe’ cited a “reliable source” in a tweet stating that the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will include higher refresh rate displays similar to those that have featured in recent iPad Pro devices.
The news comes days after users of the recently released iOS 14 developer beta found a setting that enables them to limit a device’s refresh rate to 60 frames per second.
The displays in iPhone devices have been 60Hz since the original launched way back in 2007, so doubling the refresh rate marks a major upgrade in screen tech.
The new 120Hz displays produce smoother motion and transitions for even the most basic tasks such as scrolling and vastly improve the user experience across the board.
Apple switched to higher rate refresh displays with its iPad Pro models in 2018, so it would not be a complete surprise if it made its way into the latest iPhones.
The Twitter account @UniverseIce is a trusted source for Samsung rumours but rarely comments on what Apple has in store.
There is a crossover on the display front though as Samsung has provided the OLED displays for Apple’s recent iPhones, including the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max.
If Apple does offer a higher refresh rate this year, it may market the tech as ‘ProMotion’ in the same way that it does for the iPad Pro.
Apple says that the tech offers smoother motion and better responsiveness without pushing the battery any harder.
Apple is tipped to release four iPhone models later this year with smaller 5.4-inch and larger 6.7-inch models lining up alongside two 6.1-inch devices.
