A newly designed iMac with slimmer bezels and updated internals is set to be unveiled by Apple at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) later this month, according to renowned tipster Sonny Dickson.
In a tweet in midweek, the @SonnyDickson account said that a new iMac will be front and centre at WWDC and that it could feature the same design language as the popular iPad Pro and the Pro Display XDR.
This means that Apple’s desktop computer may finally house an almost bezel-less design and a slimmer profile while housing more powerful CPU and graphics chips.
A refresh for the iMac is long overdue as Apple last highlighted a design update for the device eight years ago.
Since then, changes have been incremental with the brighter displays added to the line-up in 2017 typical of the evolution of the iMac during the last decade.
Dickson also claimed that the 2020 iMac is likely to have Apple’s second-gen T2 Security Chip, which promises to deliver a “new level of integration and security”.
Graphic performance will also be improved with the inclusion of an AMD Navi GPU.
Earlier rumours claim that the next iMac will run 10th-gen Intel processors.
Dickson also expects Apple to omit the Fusion Drive from an iMac for the first time since 2012 in favour of faster SSDs.
The latest leak comes just 24 hours after reports revealed Apple’s plans to announce its switch to ARM-based CPUs.
Intel chips have powered Mac devices for the past 15 years, but Apple is now ready to forge its own path after becoming frustrated at the pace of performance improvements.
A new iMac could be one of several devices unveiled at the annual WWDC, which will get underway on 22nd June.
The event will be held online this year due to COVID-19, but a wave of new software and hardware announcements is still expected.
