As was covered in the previous post Mac OS X Security: An Overview, Mac OS X is more secure than ever. However there are a few simple steps every Mac user should be familiar with to ensure they avoid any security issues. Here are 10 simple steps to help you keep your Mac secure.
Software Update
Keep you Mac up to date by installing all the latest system updates from Apple.
Safari Configuration
Make sure all built-in safety features are switched on in Safari. These are: ‘Open “safe” files after downloading’, ‘Block pop-up windows’ and ‘Warn when visiting a fraudulent website’
Downloading Files
When downloading files from the web make sure you trust the website and there content, This is very important when you download from sites such as torrent sharing websites.
Pop-Up Adverts
Never click on a pop-up that may be advertising security software (Even if it looks Genuine)
Check for Updates to Apps
Keep all applications on your Mac up to date, All software developers release updates to there software regularly, Always check you are using the most up to date version.
Mac App Store
Use the Mac App Store! The Mac App Store is great utilize it. The Mac App Store will always tell you if there is an update available for an App, You can also be reassured that the software within the Mac App Store is safe as it is tested by Apple.
Firewall
Use Mac OS X’s built-in firewall, This will help prevent anyone gaining access to your computer and all your data.
Get Some Anti-Virus Software
Mac Infected ? Explore Anti-Virus software that is available for the Mac, Most internet security companies have Mac versions of there software available. The Mac App Store has a lot to choose from they can be really useful if you do download an infected file and want to safely remove it.

Take a look at Apple’s support website and online discussion forums they are invaluable when it comes to finding out the latest information about possible threats that may be effecting the Mac.
Use Your Common Sense
Be safe online, Common sense will make sure that you stay safe most of the time! The internet is amazing just make sure you trust the websites you are visiting and think before clicking links or downloading files from websites you are unfamiliar with.
